The actions of hydrogen peroxide
PHAGOCYTOSIS: Few doctors realize that when a white blood cell engulfs a “germ” for phagocytosis, that under the influence of interferon, hydrogen peroxide is produced and secreted into the vacuole containing the undesired organism, and if the organism contains no catalyze it will likely to be destroyed ( why give interferon when you can give peroxide?)
MEMBRANE INTEGRITY: Hydrogen peroxide is generated by most cellular membranes including mitochondrial and nuclear membranes. Peroxide maintains membrane integrity, and participates in the transport of some substances across membranes.
THYROGLOBULIN AND THYROXINE: Iodine requires peroxide in order to produce thyroglobulin and thyroxine.
EFFECT ON IRON AND LIPID PEROXIDATION: Lipid peroxidation occurs when the ratio of Fe-3 (ferric) to Fe-2 (ferrous) in the body is between 1.1 and 8.1. Natural levels of peroxide in the body tend to keep the iron ratios in this range and favor lipid peroxidation (that’s why anti-oxidants are recommended by doctors). Fortunately, intravenous additions of peroxide cause excess ferrous iron to be oxidized into ferric state. This keeps the ratio well above 8.1 and reduces lipid peroxidation. (NOTE: EDTA chelation therapy works similarly… by chelating away ferrous iron, the ratio of irons again is thrown to greater than 8.1 and lipid peroxidation is reduced). There is no study indicating that peroxide “initiates or supports” microsomal lipid peroxidation.
INSULIN-LIKE ACTION: Peroxide acts like insulin by affecting the RBC membrane to transport glucose . Blood sugar has been known to normalize during peroxide therapy.
PROGESTERONE PRODUCTION: Progesterone production in the ‘uterus’ requires peroxide, which is produced under the stimulation of estrogen.
CONVERSION OF ARRHYTHMIAS: Peroxide was used successfully to convert ventricular fibrillation.
REMOVES PLAQUE: Called ‘oxidative detoxification’ by Dr. Charles Farr, oxidation may remove lipid deposits from artery walls (43). Numerous studies suggest this benefit, however several studies involved ‘intra-arterial’ infusions, not intravenous (43). Intra-arterial injections have caused a rise in the intra-arterial cholesterol and triglycerides, followed by evidence of reduction of plaque and improved artery elasticity.
CORONARY ISCHEMIA: Peroxide has a protective effect on ischemic heart muscle.
CONTROL OF BODY TEMPRATURE: Peroxide participates in the control of body temperature through an effect upon mitochondria.
“DEBRIDES THE LUNGS”: Presumed to be the result of high concentration of oxygen and peroxide at the alveolar surface, foreign debris, even of many decades duration, are oxidized, and separated from the alveolar surface. Clinical implications to be discussed later.
KILLS MANY VIRUSES, BACTERIA, YEAST, PROTOZOA, FUNGI, and PARASITES: There is a big difference between lists of organisms killed in the test-tube, and the practical application of intravenous peroxide. But there is no doubt that IV peroxide kills/destroys a great many viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites clinically.
DESTROYS COMPLEX MOLECULES: Although experimental evidence is lacking, complex and perhaps synthetic molecules for which the body has no method of detoxification or elimination seem to be able to neutralized, oxidized, disassembled or otherwise eliminated. There seems no doubt but that clinically, environmental sufferers and allergy sufferers improve with peroxide infusions.
REDUCES PAIN: There is no agreed explanation for the pain relief, which may follow intravenous peroxide infusions. However the theory is that most chronic pain results from anoxia on a tissue level. It is believed that it is the oxygenation effects, which are pain relieving. It has been noticed that when peroxide helps pain relief it’s action remains for many hours a day, but pain relief wears off as the extra oxygen provided by the treatment dissipates. When there is a lasting pain relief it is believed that it is from another mechanism of action, such as killing of a virus, reduction of inflammation, etc .
Miscellaneous actions of hydrogen peroxide
- Cholesterol and triglycerides decrease immediately after intravenous infusions
- Repeated infusions of peroxide did not cause bone marrow depression, anemia.
- Glucose may rise slightly due to the carrier solution (d5w) not the peroxide.
- There may be reduction of RBC and WBC immediately after the treatment because old deteriorating cells have little catalase and are destroyed, leaving behind only quality young cells. This temporary decrease has never been found to be deleterious.
- A blood chemistry profile is little changed 24 hours after a peroxide infusion however there is a 2-10% decrease in many constituents within an hour of infusion.
- Peroxide has a role in prostaglandin synthesis.
- Indirectly stimulates ATP production.
- Dilatation of coronary, pulmonary, and peripheral vessels.
- Decreases heart rate, vascular resistance. Increases stroke volume, cardiac output.
- Stimulates monocytes and T helper cells.
